Jennifer Anderson, who has been a champion for the Boys & Girls Club of Jackson County for three decades, was named the agency’s Chief Executive Officer by the Boys & Girls Club board of directors earlier this month. Anderson replaces her friend and mentor, Catherine Glaude, who retired as Boys & Girls Club CEO this summer after many years as the “godmother” of the local organization.

Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula designated as ‘baby friendly’

Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula joins the list of hospitals on the Coast that have been designated as ‘baby friendly.’ The Pascagoula hospital just achieved the status after a rigorous review process conducted by Baby-Friendly USA. It means Singing River is adhering to the highest standards of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Ocean Springs Hospital, Merit Health Biloxi, and Memorial Hospital are also recognized as baby-friendly facilities in South Mississippi.

Naval officials update mayor Wanda Williams on the construction of the USS Harrisburg

Officials from the United States Navy visited Harrisburg today to update Mayor Wanda Williams on the construction of a new ship bearing the city’s name. The USS Harrisburg is currently under construction at a shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The $2 billion landing platform dock ship is expected to be commissioned in 2024 and put into service in 2025 after its construction is complete.

Crowley charters LNG-fueled boxship quartet from Eastern Pacific Shipping

Crowley has 23 company-owned and/or operated U.S.-flag product tankers, including four LNG-ready 50,000dwt fuel-efficient tankers built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The company also has two LNG-powered container/roll on-roll off ships El Coquí and Taíno. Both ships were constructed at VT Bollinger in Pascagoula, with Crowley Solutions providing construction management services.

City of Ocean Springs hiring first responders

The City of Ocean Springs is hiring police officers and firefighters. News 25’s Lorraine Weiskopf stopped by the Ocean Springs Fire Department and spoke with firefighters about what being a first responder means to them. Ocean Springs Firefighter Adam Johnson said, “I’ve worked for Ocean Springs Fire for four years now and every bit of those four years has been a great experience for me.” If you’re debating becoming a first responder, talk with Johnson. “I like the most about firefighting is to go and give a helping hand to people that need it because that might be their worst day.”

‘Principal for a Day’ event hosts local, state leaders to learn from Ocean Springs schools

The Ocean Springs School District hosted local and state leaders for its annual “Principal for a Day” event Thursday. The event, which took place at Ocean Springs High School, Ocean Springs Middle School and Ocean Springs Upper Elementary, is designed to help legislative leaders understand the rewards and challenges of school leadership. At the high school, state representative Otis Anthony spent time shadowing school leaders and learning about the day-to-day operations of local public schools. “It has blown my mind. I have taken plenty of notes to take back to my home district to see if we can implement some of the academic excellence that they are doing here, and this school… I’m just in awe,” Anthony said.

Crowley Partners with EPS to Build LNG Ships for Latin America Service

The new vessels are also the next step for Crowley, which currently operates over 170 vessels, mostly in the Jones Act fleet. The company launched its first LNG-fueled vessels in 2018 with the El Coquí, a 720-foot combination container/roll on-roll off ship followed by her sister ship Taíno for Crowley’s service to Puerto Rico. Built by VT Bollinger’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the ships are 26,500 dwt with a capacity to transport up to 2,400 TEUs. Tom Crowley highlighted that the new vessels’ use of LNG and emissions technology will advance the company’s commitment to innovation and decarbonization in the shipping industry as part of its sustainability strategy.

Closin’ in on Cruisin’

Voted America’s top car show four of the last five years, Cruisin’ the Coast returns to the Mississippi coast Oct. 2 and appears on its way to another outstanding week-long run. In 2021, the planets aligned for Cruisin’ after the 2020 event was stunted thanks to COVID-19 and an approaching storm. The weather last year was postcard perfect, the event was celebrating its 25th anniversary, people were getting back to normal life, post-COVID, and the result was record-setting registrations and attendance.

Pascagoula celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Festival Hispano

Pascagoula is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, holding a Festival Hispano at Pascagoula Beach Park. “We wanted to include everybody. We got Resurrection, we got Pascagoula-Gautier School District, we got local churches, we got local salsa bands that are singing,” said Lazaro Rovira. “We wanted to make it Hispanic, we want it to involve all the local Hispanic businesses as well.” This is an opportunity for enjoyment. “It’s very interesting to see everyone in their native costumes and it’s just a nice day,” said one festival goer.

Pascagoula River Audubon Center set to host Hummingbird Migration and Nature Festival

The birds are flocking to the Pascagoula River Audubon Center, and so are nature lovers. Volunteers were gearing up Thursday afternoon as hundreds are expected to attend the Hummingbird Migration and Nature Festival in Moss Point. “This weekend we are going to be banding hummingbirds,” said Kyle Shepard, Banding Coalition of the Americas public relations director. “We have traps set up behind us.” Shepard is a bander, and he’ll be catching hummingbirds and attaching a lightweight aluminum band with a serial number. The device allows him to track the birds as they travel.
