On Tuesday, the Ocean Springs School Board of Trustees unanimously approved a $52 million bond resolution, and set a special election for March 18. District officials call it a no-tax-increase bond as it maintains the current tax rate of $80.31 per $100,000 in property value. The bond money would be used to address infrastructure and the expansion of multiple schools.

However, one company is busy tackling the issue of the digital divide not only nationwide, but in South Mississippi. On Saturday, families poured into the Moss Point School District Family Education Center with grateful hearts to pick up free laptops. “This is important because now we’re in a virtual environment where computer skills are very important for parents to have as they work with their children,” explains Michael Walker, Vice President of Public Affairs for AT&T. AT&T and Human IT have donated 125 laptops to parents for public schools to support digital literacy.

This year, its soared to 92.23 percent which is the highest graduation rate for the school district in 25 years. School leaders say it’s all a result of the teachers, students, and parents coming together to place an emphasis on student success.

Momentum in Moss Point is rising as city leaders are making strides for upcoming projects. First is the revitalization of the riverfront property, across the street from city hall. What is now an empty plot of land is planned to become a multi-use development, aimed at bringing in businesses and living spaces. Leaders are also planning for changes to the park that’ll encourage more traffic, including strengthening the docks and adding a stage for concerts.

That’s how Gautier Mayor Casey Vaughan describes an idea that will be built on land along Highway 57 in Jackson County. The Legacy Park project is a multi-use site that will be the home of a Cardiac Center where surgery will take place. This was approved by the Mississippi Department of Health. The grounds will have an endoscopy center, a cardiac surgery center, a vascular center, and medical offices, but with added bonuses as well.

Coast Guard begins construction of first heavy polar icebreaker in 5 decades

The U.S. Coast Guard has received approval to commence construction of its first heavy polar icebreaker in more than 50 years. The milestone announcement comes as the service also reveals the acquisition of an interim icebreaker to bridge immediate operational needs. The first Polar Security Cutter (PSC), under construction at Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, builds upon prototype work initiated in summer 2023. The project employs an innovative eight-unit prototype fabrication assessment approach, designed to optimize construction processes and workforce development before full production begins.
