Chevron grants schools $62K for STEM

Chevron awarded tens of thousands of dollars to schools across Jackson County Wednesday. It’s an investment in the future of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). “Hopefully this will provide opportunities for students who maybe didn’t think about engineering or think about mathematics or science,” Chevron Community Affairs representative Amy Brandenstein said. Chevron awarded $62,000 to 10 schools: St. Martin Middle, St. Martin High, East Central Middle, East Central High, Fab Lab, Moss Point High, Resurrection Catholic Elementary, Pascagoula High, and Escatawpa.
Jackson County helps fund a new project in Ocean Springs

Jackson County Board of Supervisors approved money for Ocean Springs purchasing of the Fayard property. The county granted the city of Ocean Springs $600,000 to help with purchasing a private property located on Front Beach. The decision was made at a meeting. Jackson County Supervisor Randy Bosarge said this project will help beautify the city. “It is going to clean it up and enhance the quality of life for the citizens once more funding becomes available to help enhance it,” Bosarge said.

Ocean Springs High School was the lone Jackson County school to earn a spot in the top 10 Mississippi schools according to the annual rankings from U.S. News & World Report. Ocean Springs ranks seventh among the 238 Mississippi high schools, behind Biloxi High School (4th) and Pass Christian High School (6th) among coast schools making the top 10.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards have been presented annually since 1986 to the top male and female student-athletes within the SEC’s 14-member institutions. LSU track and field standout Lisa Gunnarsson was the female honoree.

Once people discover the new Marina Cantina off U.S. 90 in Ocean Springs, they don’t want to leave, said Scott Sutherland, director of operations. “Cabo San Lucas hits Mississippi” is how owner Thomas Genin described his original Gulfport location, which opened in 2020. And just like the original, diners arrive at the new restaurant at 705 Bienville Blvd. near the Biloxi Bay Bridge by vehicle, by boat, or by using the underpass off Porter Avenue to get there safely by golf cart.

Pascagoula to issue $12 million bond for infrastructure improvements

Mayor Jay Willis says the City of Pascagoula could use “about a half a billion dollars” to address the city’s massive infrastructure needs, but they will start with $12 million to address the most pressing of those needs. The Pascagoula City Council has approved the issuance of a general obligation bond not to exceed $12 million for improvements and repairs to the city’s aging water system, as well as drainage, sewer systems, and the accompanying road work.
River Art Gallery opens new studio in Pascagoula

River Art Gallery held a grand opening celebration Friday to debut its new location in Pascagoula. The gallery is run by the Singing River Art Association. The non-profit provides a community for local artists. The organization recently had to relocate after learning the building where the previous art studio was located was being purchased by another company. Singing River Art Organization President Jeff Baldock said the studio has become very popular among members of the local art community.
