Ocean Springs finally ready to purchase, develop Front Beach property

With an assist from the state legislature and Jackson County supervisors, the City of Ocean Springs is finally set to purchase a parcel of Front Beach property which has been privately owned since 1948 and unused since Hurricane Katrina. Last year, the Mississippi Legislature rejected the City’s request for more than $2 million in Gulf of Mexico Security Act (GOMESA) funding, which put the City’s efforts to purchase the property in limbo, just as previous attempts to secure Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) and RESTORE Act funds had fallen through in previous years.

Congress Wants Potential 15 Hull, 5-year Destroyer Deal at 3 Ships a Year

Congress is considering a new multi-ship deal to buy up to 15 guided-missile destroyers for the Navy over the next five years, two legislative sources familiar with the deliberations told USNI News on Thursday. The deal would authorize a 10-ship multi-year deal with options to buy five additional Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers from Fiscal Year 2023 to 2027. The work would be split between General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Maine and HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi. If approved by Congress, the multiyear contract would extend the DDG-51 line to 104 hulls through DDG-153.

Free Flowin’ River Festival draws a crowd to Pascagoula

Pascagoula Main Street’s Free Flowin’ River Festival at Beach Park brought together quite a crowd Saturday. Funky vibrations from headliner Flow Tribe filled the air that evening, ahead of a fireworks show and other entertainment. The festival celebrates the Pascagoula River, which is the largest free-flowing river left in the United States.

Catboat helps bring life to local maritime museum

From a shipwreck, to an idea, to reality. On Wednesday, a restored catboat was unveiled to the world at the Mississippi Maritime Museum and Activity Center. “This is what we started this museum for – education,” said Richard Lucas, member of the museum’s board of directors. “We want people to know about the great heritage down here.” Mort and Joan Caplan of Gulfport donated the ship, which was originally crafted in Nova Scotia using a local shipwrecked catboat as inspiration.

Keesler Federal Credit and MS Aquarium honor local teachers

Keesler Federal Credit Union wanted to make teachers in South Mississippi feel extra special this week. In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, Keesler Federal paired up with the Mississippi Aquarium and asked superintendents from 16 local schools to nominate teachers they thought would benefit the most from a behind the scenes 30-minute tour at the aquarium.

Students graduate from Project Search in Ocean Springs

A long-awaited graduation took place Wednesday in Ocean Springs. Students celebrated all their accomplishments as they graduated from Project Search. Wednesday’s ceremony was hosted by Singing River Health System. The program provides work experience and independent living skills to people with disabilities. Many of the graduates called this program life-changing.

MGCCC hosts spring commencement for Class of 2022

Today, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College celebrated its spring commencement at the Coast Coliseum. The day began with the nursing and health professions graduation at 8:30 a.m. which consisted of almost 200 students. It then followed up with the graduation of about 700 students graduating in a variety of associate degrees as well as receiving specific credentials and certificates that belong with their degree.
