Miss. Power cuts ribbon on new, upgraded Bayou Casotte substation
PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WLOX) – On Wednesday, Mississippi Power cut the ribbon on an upgraded substation in Jackson County, which officials say will provide reliable service for the next 70 years. Substations take high-voltage electricity from power plants, lower the voltage, and distribute the power to homes and businesses. The Bayou Casotte substation was built 70 years ago and needed an update. Officials say the need for improvement was sparked by the county’s recent growth and development and that the new enhanced substation will make way for another 70 years of growth. “At the end of the day, it’s about the electric utility and the whole composite of other utilities, but the electric utility is such a key, important variable in the overall economic development equation,” described George Freeland, executive director of the Jackson County Economic Development Foundation.
