Singing River breaks ground on new Vancleave Medical Clinic
Singing River Health System is breaking ground on a new Medical Clinic in Vancleave this week. According to the health system, the new clinic will be a 7,808 square foot facility built directly behind its current clinic. It is expected to serve an estimated 25,000 patients annually. The health system says this project will substantially improve the health, safety, and quality of life for northern Jackson County for many years to come.
Ingalls to hold keel-laying for LPD 31
Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Pascagoula shipyard will host a ceremonial keel-laying for the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock Pittsburgh (LPD 31) on Friday, June 2, 2023. The Pittsburgh (LPD 31) is the fifth Navy vessel to be named after the historic city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The first ship was an ironclad gunboat and served during the American Civil War. Since then, the name Pittsburgh has been assigned to four vessels that have served the U.S. during conflict. The ship’s sponsor, Nancy Urban, will be in attendance as she declares the keel “truly and fairly laid.”

Currently, he is working in Sasebo, Japan, as an on-site technical representative for the Fleet Sustainment Engineering department. “It gives me great pleasure to know my work helps contribute to the national security of the United States and ensures sailors are safe while performing their day-to-day assignments,” he said. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, Sanon decided to make Mississippi his home and began working at Ingalls in 1995 as a shipfitter apprentice. His first job was laying down strongbacks on one of the LHD decks, while attending classes at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College twice a week.

Ingalls Shipbuilding Company offered jobs to 23 high school seniors. The soon-to-be graduates completed a two-year technical program with Ingalls Shipbuilding Academy. Some of the professions the students will be entering include welders, pipe fitters, and joiners.

Students at Escatawpa Upper Elementary grooved back to the days of lava lamps as part of their STEM lab. The project in Kristen Harrison’s third grade class was made possible through Chevron, which presented 13 ‘Project Lead the Way’ grants totaling $65,000 across Jackson County. Escatawpa Upper uses its grant to fund the STEM lab for all students.

Farther east along the U.S. Gulf Coast, Pascagoula, Miss.-based Oleo-X on May 4 said renewable diesel production was underway at its facility in the city, which also can manufacture sustainable aviation fuel. SAF is seen as key to cleaning up the emission footprint of another of the hard-to-decarbonize segments of the transportation sector. The Pascagoula plant can produce up to 300 million gallons per year of renewable diesel and SAF. Oleo-X converted conventional refining units; the facility previously manufactured chemicals for tires, dyes and building materials.

A multi-million dollar project is underway in the City of Discovery. The long-awaited hotel and retail complex construction will soon begin on Government Street. A new tourist attraction will be planted in the heart of Ocean Springs. The downtown strip welcomes shops small and large. Navy leadership wants to expand construction of its new guided-missile frigate to four ships per year as soon as practical, service leaders told the Senate Armed Service Committee on Tuesday. By the end of the year, the service expects Constellation-class (FFG-62) shipbuilder Fincantieri Marinette Marine to have the technical data package ready for a second shipbuilder to start constructing more Connies, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said in response to SASC ranking member Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) Gulf Coast yards Austal USA in Mobile, Ala., and Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss., have both positioned themselves to take on roles as the second frigate yard. Austal, which once only built aluminum ships, has stood up a steel line to expand the types of ships it can build. Ingalls is completing the final National Security Cutters for the Coast Guard and has construction capacity available.

Leaders in Pascagoula are on a mission to improve living conditions, and they’re giving residents a new way to track the changes in their community. A new interactive map on the city’s website tracks upcoming, in progress, and recently completed infrastructure projects. Many are aimed at making improvements to water, sewage, drainage and streets. One of those projects is in Briarwood Estates, where engineers are working on a drainage improvement project. Lynn Edwards is a resident there. He said his neighborhood has dealt with flooding in the past and hopes this project will bring it to a halt.

Jackson County breaks ground on new Justice Court property

On Wednesday, the Jackson County Board of Supervisors held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Justice Court’s new location. The current Justice Court has been located in the East Jackson County Services Complex Building for over 30 years. Jackson County Board of Supervisors Project Manager Matthew Hosey said the current building’s “uses didn’t lend itself to be in the same building as a courtroom.” Hosey also points out the importance of the proximity the new building will have to the Adult Detention Center on Telephone Road in Pascagoula. “Now that they’re next door to the ADC building, that will make it much easier and a shorter trip for the sheriff’s office to transport people for their court dates,” he said.
