Ocean Springs purchases property on Front Beach for $1.3M

The city of Ocean Springs has purchased property on Front Beach for $1.3 million with intentions to turn the land into a stop for those wishing to visit the area’s oceanfront and beaches. According to Mayor Kenny Holloway, plans to acquire the land have been in the making for some time, as the property has been mostly vacant since 2005. After Hurricane Katrina, the property’s only operating business—a seafood company—was closed due to damage to the facility.

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi, currently has more than 11,300 people on staff, including union-represented craftsmen and women, engineers, planners, supply chain specialists, business management and program management professionals. The company’s weekly payroll of $14 million has a tremendous economic benefit to the region. HII announced July 6 that the Ingalls Shipbuilding division plans to hire more than 2,000 full-time shipbuilders as part of its future workforce plans.

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding Awarded DDG(X) Design Engineering Contract

PASCAGOULA, Miss. — HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has been awarded a cost-plus-incentive-fee contract for engineering and design from the U.S. Navy for the next-generation guided-missile destroyer (DDG(X)) program, the company said July 22.  “We are excited to continue on this path with our Navy and industry partners,” Ingalls Shipbuilding President Kari Wilkinson said. “It provides us a tremendous opportunity to bring best practices and innovation from our experienced engineering team to the design of this important future surface combatant.”

Employers finding ways to recruit, retain employees

The company wants to add 2,000 full-time shipbuilders to its 800-acre facility that builds U.S. Navy destroyers, amphibious warships and national security cutters. The company said its competitive starting wages, benefits, 12 paid holidays annually, and opportunities for advancement make Ingalls a great place to work. “With over 500 different jobs, there is no limit to what you can do at Ingalls,” said Susan Jacobs, vice president of human resources and administration. “Shipbuilding is hard work, but we strive to make sure our shipbuilders have the tools and conveniences they need to do the hard work well.”

Ocean Springs seeks $2 million in GCRF money to move public works complex

Ocean Springs is looking to secure $2 million in Gulf Coast Restoration Fund money to move the city’s public works complex from its longtime home off of Pine Drive to a new location along U.S. 90. City officials are close to completing a deal to purchase a piece of property off of the highway, across from the location of the Goodwill retail store. The site was once the location of a concrete plant and sits directly north of the railroad tracks, behind the former location of a Blockbuster video store.

Local students tour D.C. as part of youth leadership program

Three students, including two from Jackson County, recently represented Singing River Electric at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Tour of Washington, D.C. Students Gianna Pierce of Ocean Springs High School and Sarah Jean Scearce of Resurrection High School, along with William Rasberry of George County High School, spent six days touring the nation’s capital along with other students chosen for the Youth Leadership Program.

GD Bath Iron Works, HII Ingalls Shipbuilding Land Navy DDG(X) Engineering, Design Contracts

The U.S. Navy has awarded contracts to General Dynamics’ (NYSE: GD) Bath Iron Works subsidiary and HII’s (NYSE: HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division to perform shipbuilder engineering and design analysis for the next-generation guided-missile destroyer program. The contractors will come up with design products in support of preliminary and contract designs for the DDG(X) program under the firm-fixed-price, cost-plus-award-fee contracts, the Department of Defense said Friday. Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding will carry out work at their respective sites across the U.S. through July 2023 and continue through July 2028 if all options are exercised.

MS: Pascagoula officials optimistic Amtrak passenger service will return to coast

Even as officials await a decision, recent signs still point to Amtrak returning to the coast. “Just within the last week they have begun setting things up for reworking the old depot platform in Pascagoula,” said Pascagoula Mayor Jay Willis.  “They’ve got some temporary fencing already up and they’ve let everyone in the area know that they are going to be moving in the equipment necessary to begin replacing the platform.”
