Huntington Ingalls Industries Shipbuilding is kicking off a $79 million expansion development project to reopen facilities on the east bank of the Pascagoula River. It’s the biggest project planned for South Mississippi in 2019. Permits have been issued for $68 million for three new fabrication shops and $13 million for site and infrastructure work. HII-Pascagoula announced in 2018 that it planned to reopen the east bank site, the original shipbuilding site. The east shipyard was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. Construction should be completed in 2020. (Source: Sun Herald, 03/16/19)
